Creating Community by Teaching Each Other

Jambo, karibuni! Jina langu ni Bill Horine. The purpose of this ning is to create a community of people who teach anthropology, particularly to secondary students. I have been teaching anthropology to high school students for 27 years now. For the most part it has been a solitary enterprise. I have attended conferences over the years (AAA and NCSS for example) but seldom have found resources specifically designed for secondary students. The emergence of Web 2.0 tools suggested a path to change this situation. I have occasionally heard from teachers in other parts of the world (mostly U.S.) about some of the content I have on my web pages for my anthro students. I know others are out there, probably working in a similar vacuum. The name of this ning suggests a new kind of community. Funzana Anthropolojia is Swahili for teaching each other anthropology (my Swahili is pretty rusty but I think the word is the correct one). My hope is that teachers (all teachers are welcome – but anthropology teachers in particular), students, professors and any other anthropologists will engage in dialogue about their programs, curriculum, methods, resources, in short, anything that has enhanced their experience of teaching anthropology to secondary students. I have created a few forums to get us started. I am sure that new ones will emerge as we grow this site.
